UNICEF: We Support All Efforts to Restore Peace in Sudan

The Permanent Representative of Sudan to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamed, received on Friday at his office the Head of UNICEF’s Geneva Office, along with Deputy Executive Director Hazel De Nette and her assistant Anastasia. During the meeting, the ambassador briefed them on the key elements of the government’s peace initiative, noting that since its presentation by Prime Minister Kamel Al-Tayeb Idris, the initiative has been welcomed and endorsed by the UN Secretary-General, the African Union, the League of Arab States, the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, as well as a number of countries at the bilateral level.

The ambassador expressed the Sudanese government’s appreciation for the valued role played by UNICEF through its country office in Sudan.

For her part, the Head of UNICEF’s Geneva Office welcomed the initiative, stressing the importance of supporting all efforts aimed at restoring peace amid rising humanitarian needs worldwide and the reluctance of donor countries to finance humanitarian response plans. She reaffirmed UNICEF’s continued commitment, through its Sudan country office, to providing all possible assistance to those affected.
