The 2026 Global Firepower ranking of the strongest militaries in Africa has shown Egypt maintaining its position at the top of the continental ranking, followed by Algeria, Nigeria, and South Africa. Sudan maintained its position in ninth place, unchanged from 2025, despite the ongoing war and its wide-ranging challenges.
The ranking is based on the PowerIndex, where lower scores indicate stronger conventional combat capability, with a comprehensive evaluation covering troop size, armament, readiness, resources, and logistical capabilities.
According to the ranking table, Ethiopia placed fifth, while Morocco advanced to sixth place (+1), and Tunisia recorded the largest jump within the top ten, rising four places to tenth position.
