Sudanese Miners Killed and Injured by Gunfire from Russian Forces in the Central African Republic

Two sources from the town of Kafia Kingi, in Al-Radom locality south of Nyala in South Darfur State, said on Wednesday that several miners were killed and others injured following an attack by Russian forces on the “Baba” mine in the Central African Republic on Tuesday.

One of the sources told Darfur24 that the attack resulted in deaths and injuries among Sudanese, Chadian and South Sudanese miners.

The source said the attack was linked to notices previously distributed by Russian forces stationed in the Central African Republic, which included a ban on illegal wildlife hunting, carrying weapons, wearing face coverings (kadamul), and using motorcycles داخل the mine, warning that any violations would be met with force.

He added that one miner hunted a gazelle fitted with a surveillance camera, prompting Russian forces to intervene using a helicopter, combat vehicles and motorcycles. The forces then opened heavy gunfire toward the miners, killing and injuring several, while others fled toward the Sudanese and South Sudanese borders.

The source said the bodies of those killed had not been buried as of Wednesday morning, while around 30 injured people were transported to Kafia Kingi, including critical cases. Injured South Sudanese miners were transferred to the city of Bor inside South Sudan.
