European Sanctions Target Militia Leaders and Colombian Nationals

An update published Thursday on the UK government website revealed that London has added six new individuals to its Sudan-related sanctions list.

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, who visited the Sudan–Chad border earlier this week, said in a statement: “We urgently need a ceasefire and safe passage for humanitarian aid agencies so they can reach all those in need.”

She added: “Through these sanctions, we will seek to dismantle the war machine of those who perpetrate or profit from brutal violence in Sudan.”

The UK imposed sanctions on three Colombian nationals — Álvaro Andrés Quijano, Mateo Andrés Duque Botero, and Claudia Viviana Oliveros Forero — over suspected involvement in recruiting foreign fighters for the conflict or facilitating the procurement of military equipment.

The sanctions also targeted Abu Aqila Mohammed Keikal, commander of the Sudan Shield Forces; a field commander in the Rapid Support Forces identified as Hussein Barsham; and the RSF’s financial adviser, Mustafa Ibrahim Abdel Nabi Mohammed.
