Guterres: Countries Are Fueling the War in Sudan

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said on Saturday that the international organization is working with the African Union and other partners to secure an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, as part of efforts to build a civilian and democratic state.

Responding to questions from Asharq’s correspondent covering the African summit in Addis Ababa, Guterres stated that “some countries are fueling the conflict in Sudan, making it more difficult to reach a sustainable political solution.”

The UN chief added that the Security Council is likely to take measures against all those responsible for violations—not only in El Fasher but across all regions of Sudan—in order to uphold accountability and achieve justice.

On Friday, the UN Human Rights Office accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of committing what it described as widespread “atrocities” amounting to “war crimes and possible crimes against humanity” during their control of the city of El Fasher.

A report issued by the Office said that RSF forces had launched a severe and shocking wave of violence, marked by extreme brutality, during their latest offensive to seize control of El Fasher last October.
