The Start of Gum Arabic Harvest in Gedaref

Abdelazim Al-Haj Al-Jamous, Secretary-General of the Gedaref State Government and representative of the Governor, on Sunday inaugurated the start of the gum Arabic harvest in the Sarf Saeed Forest in Basanda locality. The event was attended by Eng. Ammar Abdullah Suleiman, Director-General of the Ministry of Production and Economic Resources.
The Governor’s representative underscored the strategic importance of gum Arabic as one of Sudan’s leading cash crops and a key source of foreign currency earnings for the national treasury. He called on residents to safeguard Sarf Saeed Forest, describing it as one of the state’s most vital environmental assets. He further reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to addressing development challenges in the village across various sectors, in partnership with community-led efforts.
For his part, Eng. Ammar Abdullah Suleiman stated that, as part of the 2026 Agricultural Transformation Program led by the ministry, field teams are currently conducting rodent control operations in Butana locality, carrying out comprehensive agricultural surveys, and implementing livestock vaccination campaigns to safeguard animal health. He emphasized the need to maximize the sustainable use of forest resources and called for stronger collaboration among communities, companies, organizations, and development partners.
