U.S. Senate Official Praises Sanctions on Rapid Support Forces Commanders

The Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee in the United States Senate, Senator Jim Risch, has commended the sanctions imposed on three commanders of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), affirming his full support for the measures against those responsible for atrocities committed against civilians in Darfur.

In a post on his official account, Senator Risch stated: “I commend the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration on three Rapid Support Forces commanders involved in genocide for committing atrocities during the siege of El Fasher in North Darfur.”

The senator stressed the urgent need to end the war in Sudan. He added: “I strongly support these actions to hold accountable those responsible for this war, the widespread destruction inflicted on the country, and the atrocities committed to terrorize civilians and eradicate communities.”

On Thursday, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) at the U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on three RSF leaders over their actions in El Fasher.

The Treasury Department said the individuals were involved in the 18-month siege of El Fasher, which ended with the city’s fall. According to the statement, RSF forces led a brutal campaign of ethnically targeted killings, torture, starvation, and sexual violence.

It further noted that since the outbreak of war in April 2023, the RSF and allied militias have committed widespread atrocities, including war crimes, crimes against humanity, and acts of genocide.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said: “We will not tolerate this ongoing terror campaign and the indiscriminate killing in Sudan. Without a swift resolution, the war in Sudan threatens to further destabilize the region, creating conditions for the growth of terrorist groups and posing a threat to U.S. security and interests.”
