Sudan’s Ministry of Energy announced that, following its previous statement regarding the shutdown of the Merowe Dam Power Station due to a fire affecting part of the facility’s electrical cables, the incident caused extensive damage to the main feeders of the Merowe–Al-Marakhiyat and Merowe–Atbara transmission lines.
In a statement, the Ministry said that technical inspections confirmed the repairs would require several days before electricity could be restored to the states affected by the outages.
The Ministry also revealed that Minister of Energy Eng. Al-Mu’tasim Ibrahim Ahmed traveled to the Merowe Dam immediately after the incident to oversee the repair operations in the presence of the state’s security committee. He directed the implementation of all necessary measures to restore power, secure the required spare parts to repair the extensive damage, and provide alternative power supplies from other generating stations while interconnecting the grid to ensure the available electricity is distributed efficiently and fairly.
The statement added that investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the fire.
The Ministry of Energy reiterated its apology to citizens for the outages, describing them as beyond its control.
