The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold two meetings this week focusing on Sudan, addressing both the country’s security situation and the impact of the war on education. The sessions are set for Wednesday and Friday.
Wednesday’s meeting will be a closed-door consultation on Sudan, requested by Denmark and the United Kingdom, the two Security Council members serving as co-penholders on the Sudan file. The meeting will discuss the humanitarian situation in the country, with particular attention to developments in Darfur, Blue Nile, and Kordofan.
The Council said that Tom Fletcher, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, is expected to brief members during the session.
According to the Council’s weekly programme, members will also participate in an informal meeting on Friday with external stakeholders, non-governmental organizations, and other participants under the theme “Protecting Education in Sudan: Investing in Peace, Recovery, and Stability.” The meeting is being organized by Somalia in cooperation with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Liberia.
