United Nations Condemns Escalation of Drone Attacks in Sudan

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the escalation of drone attacks carried out by parties to the conflict in Sudan, as well as their devastating consequences for civilians.

A statement issued by the Secretary-General’s spokesperson on Saturday said that drone strikes had killed hundreds of civilians across Sudan and in Abyei, the area between Sudan and South Sudan, including women and children, in violations of international humanitarian law.

In the statement, the Secretary-General condemned all attacks directed against civilians and civilian infrastructure, including healthcare facilities.

He called on the parties to the conflict to refrain from placing civilians and critical infrastructure at risk and to agree, without delay, to a cessation of hostilities as a first step towards ending the devastating conflict.

Guterres renewed his urgent appeal to the parties to engage in good faith with mediation efforts. The statement reaffirmed that the United Nations stood ready to support any efforts aimed at advancing a sustainable political solution that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
