West African Democracy is in Danger – Ghana’s Akufo-Addo

Sudan Events – Sumaya Sayed

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo says West Africa is confronted with a difficult economic, political and social insecurity situation. “Despite the considerable progress made by regional bloc Ecowas in the areas of democracy, good governance and the rule of law since the 1990s, the region is currently witnessing a significant decline in its democratic relations,” he said.
Akufo-Addo said this at a high-level parliamentary seminar on the ‘Role of the Ecowas Parliament Relating the Challenges of Unconstitutional Regime Change and Presidential Term Limits in West Africa”, organized by the Ecowas Parliament in Winneba in Ghana.
Speaker of Ecowas Parliament Sidie Mohammed Tunis said that the seminar had been considered as part of parliament’s obligations to determine what causes military takeovers, democratic regression, and political instability in the sub-region.
