The United Nations said that Sudan is facing the largest internal displacement crisis in the world, after more than 7.1 million people were displaced within the country.
A report by the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs in Sudan stated on Sunday that about 18,750 people were newly displaced during the past week.
The report indicated that about 1.1 million people crossed into the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan, as of October 8, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
He confirmed the killing and arrest of at least 45 aid workers since April 15, almost all of them national staff.
He stated that the prices of wheat, sorghum, and the local food basket of the World Food Programme, rose last September, while the Appeal of Sudan Humanitarian Response Plan for 2023 was only funded by 33.5% until October 19th.
He said, “After 6 months of war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, Sudan has been pushed into one of the worst humanitarian nightmares in modern history, with up to 9,000 people killed, and 25 million people in need of assistance.”
The report expected that the continuation of the current situation would lead to a severe shortage of food supplies and other basic commodities, which would exacerbate the situation and place millions of people at great risk.
