UN Official Warns of Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan

Humanitarian Coordinator of the United Nations Mission in Sudan, ,Clementine Nkweta-Salami said in press statements Sunday that Sudanese civilians have suffered for nearly seven months of violent conflict and a humanitarian tragedy that is getting darker by the day.
Salami warned, that we cannot allow this to happen Maintaining the world’s attention is a formidable challenge , adding, “We owe to the people of Sudan to ensure that promises made by the SAF and the RSF to protect civilians and provide unhindered humanitarian assistance are kept “Access is maintained,” said Nkweta-Salami.
Adding that these obligations include the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, calling on all parties to the conflict in Sudan to abide by their obligations under international human rights and humanitarian law.
The official pointed to the destruction of the health sector and more than 70 percent of health facilities in conflict zones are out of service. “This is very worrying not least because of the continued outbreaks of diseases such as cholera, dengue, malaria and measles.”
The UN official stressed that “the Sudanese people need sustained support.”
Fighting in Sudan between the Sudanese army and the RSF since mid-April has prompted more than 4.5 million people to flee their homes elsewhere inside Sudan and more than 1.2 million people seeking refuge in neighbouring countries, according to the U.N. migration agency.
