UK Top Court: A Plan to Send Migrants to Rwanda is Unlawful
Sudan Events – Sumaya Sayed
Britain’s highest court is set to rule, Wednesday on whether the government’s plan to send asylum-seekers to Rwanda is legal, delivering a boost or a blow to a contentious central policy of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s administration.
The court’s five judges unanimously backed a judgment by the Court of Appeal that the policy was unlawful because of the risk that asylum seekers sent to Rwanda would be returned to their own country and face persecution in breach of their human rights.
It represents a major blow for the Prime Minister who has made the Rwanda scheme a central plank in his pledge to “stop the boats” by deterring migrants from making further crossings.
