French police said on Friday that they had arrested French club Nice defender Youcef Atal on charges of “defending terrorism.”
Algerian player Atal published a video clip about the Gaza war, according to what Agence France-Presse learned from the public prosecutor in the French city of Nice.
Atal (27 years old) quickly deleted the post and apologized, but his club decided on October 18 to suspend him until further notice, and the French League’s disciplinary committee also suspended him for 7 matches on the 26th of last month.
An investigation was opened on October 16 after the Public Prosecution was notified by the municipality of Nice, on charges of “defending terrorism” and “incitement to hatred or violence based on a specific religion.”
