Algerian star Riyad Mahrez, player of Al-Ahly Saudi club, has been dropped out of the final race for the Confederation of African Football awards. He was among the preliminary list of candidates for the Best Player in Africa award for the year 2023.
CAF decided the final competition between the Moroccan Achraf Hakimi, the Paris Saint-Germain player, the Nigerian Victor Osimhen, the Napoli player, and the Egyptian Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool player, with the name of the winner being announced on Monday in Morocco.
Mahrez’s exclusion from the final list sparked controversy and anger in Algeria after he contributed to his former club, Manchester City, achieving the treble last season by winning the English Premier League title, the FA Cup, and then the European Champions League.
