Former German football star Stefan Effenberg advised his compatriot Toni Kroos not to return to the “Machines” national team.
According to the German News Agency, Kroos (33 years old) decided to retire from international football after the last European Nations Cup finals (Euro 2020), but speculation indicates the possibility of him returning again to participate with the German national team in the next European Championship (Euro 2024), which Germany will host. Next summer, especially after Julian Nagelsmann expressed his desire to speak with the Spanish Real Madrid midfielder.
But Effenberg believes there are reasons why Kroos, the 2014 World Cup winner, should stick to his decision.
“If you miss a tournament like this at an older age, it may give you an additional season or even two seasons with your club,” Effenberg wrote in his column on the German news website T-Online on Thursday.
Effenberg emphasized, “From a sporting standpoint, it will certainly help the team win and provide stability, there is no doubt about that.” “He has been performing at a very high level for years and continues to do so at Real Madrid.”
He added, “It is possible that what he has achieved for German football will be destroyed if he participates in the upcoming European Nations, as things are not going well in the German national team that is hosting the competition.”
The German national team has suffered a sharp decline in its results in recent years, as it was eliminated from the group stage in the last two World Cup editions, which led to the dismissal of coach Hansi Flick less than a year before hosting the European Nations.
Nagelsmann, the former German coach of BayernMunich (36 years old), has achieved mixed results since taking charge of the German national team, as Effenberg appealed to him to summon players capable of performing with the team.

Effenberg (55 years old) stressed, “It’s all about who is really ready at this moment and who will actually help the team.”
