SSMO: Expired Commodities, Destroyed

The Sudanese Standards & Metrology Organization (SSMO), Kasala branch, destroyed 11 tons of expired commodities worth 23 million pounds, including foodstuffs, cosmetics, and soft drinks that were recently seized by SSMO teams and the relevant authorities, members of the State Committee for Consumer Affairs.

The Acting Governor of Kasala, Mohammed Musa, referred to the application of clever destroying to preserve the country’s economy, and said that raising public awareness among consumers is one of SSMO’s goals to preserve their rights and safety and to respond by immediately reporting to SSMO’s branch in the state, praising the efforts of the committee’s teams to protect consumers in the state.

For his part, the Acting Director General of SSMO, Wasfi Al-Jamri, said that despite the exceptional circumstances that the country is going through and the difficult process and in light of the war that has been going on since last April, SSMO is performing its full role in its effort to protect society against trade in expired commodities.

Dr. Nahla Mohammed Abdullah Mohammed, Director of SSMO branch in Kasala State, said that the SSMO has been carrying out periodic inspection campaigns, in cooperation with partners in the Consumer Affairs Committee, on commercial stores and industrial facilities to ensure the quality and validity of commodities and products in order to protect the consumer and then destroy what does not conform to specifications.

He said the team also orient merchants to take into account the technical aspects related to proper storage so that the goods are not exposed to damage.

It also called on consumers to check the product’s identification card before purchasing.
