Djibouti: We hope IGAD summit reaches a peaceful solution

Djibouti, the current chair of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), announced that it will hold an extraordinary summit on the ongoing crisis between Ethiopia and Somalia and the situation in Sudan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Djibouti said, in a statement, that the summit was called for by President Ismail Omar Guelleh, who also chairs the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and will be hosted by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on January 18, 2024, according to what was reported by the Somali National News Agency “SONNA”.

The statement said that the summit will address two main issues: the escalating tension between Ethiopia and Somalia over the Somali Sea and the Ethiopian agreement with Somaliland, and the political and security challenges in Sudan.

The statement added that official invitations will be sent to all IGAD member states, the African Union and international partners through diplomatic channels, and asked the IGAD secretariat in Djibouti to coordinate with the Ugandan authorities to organize the summit.

The statement affirmed Djibouti’s commitment to the principles of good neighborliness and regional cooperation, and expressed its hope for reaching a peaceful and stable solution to the conflicts in the region.
