WHO: Sudan forgotten On Global Conflicts map

Agencies – Sudan Events

The Regional Director of the World Health Organization – Eastern Mediterranean Region, Ahmed Al-Mandhari, has confirmed that the deteriorating security situation in Gezira State has forced the organization to suspend its work, and warned that the health conditions in Sudan are getting worse, in light of the conflict between the “Rapid Support” forces and the army, and that Sudan is “forgotten on the map of global conflicts.”

Al-Mandhari added in statements to the Arab World News Agency that with the beginning of the fighting between the Rapid Support and the army 9 months ago, especially in Khartoum and some areas of Darfur, the World Health Organization used Gezira State, specifically Wad Madani, as a logistical center, followed by other international organizations.

He added that Gezira State was a refuge for approximately 500,000 citizens, 46 percent of whom were displaced from other regions, and the Gezira State is considered the food basket for all of Sudan.

But after the fifteenth of December and the “Rapid Support” control over several areas in the state of Gezira, Al-Mandhari said on Friday that the state lacks security and chaos spread, threatening health institutions, health care workers and international organizations.

“After the Rapid Support Forces attacked Gezira State, and were able to control a number of areas, a large number of citizens were displaced, and unfortunately, after the conflict intensified, it became a dangerous area.” He continued.
He pointed out that all operations of international organizations have been suspended since December 15, and no one from the relevant or specialized teams of international organizations has entered or left.
Regarding the timetable for the return of the United Nations organization to work in Gezira State, “The matter depends on our assessment of the security situation on the ground,” He said. “The evaluation is carried out at the level of the entire United Nations, and not the World Health Organization alone, but it seems clear that there is a spread of the circle of conflict, and therefore we cannot work under fire.” Al-Mandhari continued.
