Warnings against Poisoned Wheat Seeds

Sudan Events – Rehab Abdullah

The Harvest Agricultural Company has announced that its warehouses near the Al-Bandari cemetery, northeast of Haj Youssef, were looted by an armed group, which was not disclosed. The company warned in a letter addressed to the Ministry of Health against the looting of (1,500) tons of wheat seeds, which were prepared for planting in the current season. The company said that a large portion of the seeds were treated with highly toxic insect and fungal agents, while the entire quantity was fumigated.

An expert in agricultural chemicals said that the disinfectants mentioned in the company’s letter are highly toxic, especially if a quantity of them is ingested, and their danger to those with chronic diseases and weak immunity increases. However, he reduced the danger of fumigation in that its effect disappears once the seeds are exposed to open air.

In his statement to (Sudan Events), an expert in the field of pesticides, Professor Ihab Al-Sir, confirmed the danger of ingesting these pesticides, indicating that ingesting these pesticides leads to the stage of acute poisoning due to the large size of the ingested dose of the toxic substance, particularly the compound phostoxin, which produces the poisonous phosphine gas inside the body and is deadly. He pointed out that it is a famous suicide compound in Egypt known as “Al-Ghala” pills.
