Sudan and ICRC Discuss Coordination

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has promised to do its level best for assisting the Sudan in the fields of health, medicinal supplies and humanitarian assistance.
The ICRC Director of Operations, Martin Schoepp, currently on visit to the Sudan has called on the member of the Sovereign Council-cum- Chairman of the Joint National Committee for Humanitarian and Health Emergencies, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Jaber Ibrahim, where the two sides discussed cooperation and coordination in the humanitarian and health fields.
The meeting was held in Port Sudan on Wednesday in the presence of the head of the Red Cross mission in Sudan, Pierre Debray.
The Sudanese Undersecretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Ismat Mustafa Youssef has described in press statement the meeting as being fruitful and it addressed health and humanitarian needs and the securing of medicinal supplies to areas of need in the Sudan.
He commended the efforts exerted by the ICRC in the various domains in the sudan, pointing out that the developments that occurred in Gezira state, central Sudan, have greatly impacted the medicinal situation in the country and its medicine stocks.
Youssef noted that the meeting touched on the role of the Red Cross in helping to ensure shipment and flow of pharmaceutical stock from Gezira to the rest of the country.
He pointed out that the Sovereign Council member has issued directives to all relevant parties to fully cooperate with the ICRC and work to overcome any challenges it might face in discharging its mission in the country.
For his part, the Federal Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, Dr. Salah Al-Mubarak said that the meeting touched on the overall humanitarian and health conditions, in addition to aspects of cooperation and joint coordination between the government and the International Committee in various humanitarian and health fields.
He added that the meeting emphasized the need to facilitate all procedures for the committee so that it can carry out its assigned role.
He explained that the meeting discussed the ICRC activities and efforts of in the past period and the challenges facing workers in the health and humanitarian fields.
He said that the Director of Operations at the International Committee promised to provide all support and assistance and to work with international partners in the humanitarian field to support Sudan in this regard.
