Iran Denies Involvement in the Attack in Jordan

Sudan Events – Sumaya Sayed

Iran’s mission to the United Nations denied involvement in the attack that killed three US service members in northeastern Jordan. The statement, published by state news agency IRNA, emphasized Iran’s lack of connection to the assault on the US base. The mission claimed that the conflict between US forces and regional resistance groups is responsible for reciprocal retaliatory attacks. US President Biden attributed the unmanned aerial drone attack on US forces to Iran-backed groups. This marks the first lethal strike against US forces since the Israel-Hamas war erupted in October, sending shock waves throughout the Middle East.

The US blamed the attack, which also left dozens injured, on “radical Iranian-backed militant groups”. US President Biden vowed revenge and said: “We shall respond.”

It is the first time that a strike has killed US troops in the region since the start of the war in Gaza triggered by Hamas’s 7 October attack on Israel.

There have been other attacks on US bases in the region, but before Sunday there were no fatalities, according to the US military.
