The Senegal national team, led by its coach Aliou Cisse, failed to continue the campaign to defend the African Nations title, after the “Lions of Teranga” exited the competitions of the current edition of the African Championship 2023 against Côte d’Ivoire, the host of the tournament, on penalties 5-4, after the end of regular and extra time in a positive draw with one goal. For each of them, in the meeting thatIt was hosted by Charles Conan Bunny Stadium, as part of the round of sixteen of the tournament.
Statistics reveal that this is the seventh consecutive edition in which the defending champion has failed to reach the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations, as the last defending champion team to reach this stage of the competition was Egypt in 2010.
Senegal will miss the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations for the first time since 2015, when it was eliminated from the group stage at that time.
This is also the third time out of four that the Senegal national team has been eliminated from the African Cup of Nations competitions on penalties.
