Prince Abdul Rahman bin Musaed, former president of Al Hilal Saudi Arabia, revealed that losing the AFC Champions League title in 2014 was among the most important reasons that prompted him to resign from his position.
Al Hilal lost the AFC Champions League title in 2014 after being defeated by Sydney Australia, 0-1, in the aggregate of the two-legged matches in the final round.
“The AFC Champions League loss to Sydney is one of the reasons that prompted me to leave, because it made me extremely frustrated, as it was a defeat caused by an actor. The referee of the match was corrupt, not unsuccessful.” Bin Musaed said, on the “Ahki Malik” podcast.
Bin Musaed, who resigned in 2015, praised Fahd bin Nafel, the current president of the club, noting that he is “an honorable model, and one of the most important presidents who have achieved achievements.”
He pointed out that he was not angry at the statements of Counselor Turki Al-Sheikh, head of the Saudi Entertainment Authority, who said that Bin Nafel did what previous club presidents were unable to do.
“In addition to the fact that we made serious mistakes, but we were also responsible for all matters, the most important of which was providing all sources of income through honorary members, there was no support from the state at that time.” Regarding the difference between Ben Nafel’s current term and his presidency, he commented.
“Sami Al Jaber could have succeeded as a coach, but the circumstances did not help him, or perhaps we did not help him. However, the decision to dismiss him was collective. In general, I say that his experience was not successful.” He concluded his statements.
Al Jaber took over as coach of Al Hilal from May 2013, but he did not last for more than one season.
