New law for the electricity sector

The government intends to issue a new law on electricity, according to which the private sector will be allowed to enter the field of generating electricity for factories and selling the surplus to the public network.
The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning stressed the importance of the electricity and water sector and its vital role in achieving development, promoting investment and creating new job opportunities.
During the extraordinary meeting he held to address electricity problems in the city of Port Sudan, he stressed the need for all concerned parties to cooperate to overcome the challenges and improve electricity service in the city.
Dr. Jibril confirmed that the issue of electricity and water in Port Sudan is one of the Ministry’s priorities at this stage, and he called on the electricity companies to prepare a summary of the urgent requirements to address the electricity problems in Port Sudan before entering the summer season, in order to ensure the provision of stable and reliable electricity to the population and vital sectors in the city.
During the meeting, the plan to prepare for the summer season was discussed, ensuring the provision of stable electricity to the city. The focus was on operating the Port Sudan power station and other stations, and addressing the problem of loads and distribution.
The problems of providing electricity to the industrial sector in Port Sudan were also discussed, and the possibility of expanding generation using solar energy was reviewed.
The new electricity law, which is expected to be issued soon, was discussed, which will allow the private sector to enter the field of generating electricity for factories and selling the surplus to the public network. While the importance of benefiting from the surplus energy in the Merowe Dam and the grid connection with Egypt was emphasized, in addition to introducing thermal generation with gas to reduce the cost of production.
It should be noted that the meeting comes within a series of meetings and efforts made by the government to improve the electricity sector in the country and meet the needs of society. As the government ministerial directives reflect the government’s commitment to providing high-quality and reliable electricity services to citizens.
