Dutchman Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool defender, is looking forward to leading his team to win the League Cup, when it meets Chelsea in the final of the competition, on Sunday.
The date between Liverpool and Chelsea will be renewed in the final of the tournament at the ancient Wembley Stadium in the British capital, London, after the two teams previously played in the same round at the same stadium in the 2021-2022 season, but this confrontation witnesses Van Dijk’s first final after he became captain of the Red Team.
Van Dijk, who was named best player in the tournament final two years ago after leading Liverpool to win the title after winning on penalties over Chelsea, spoke about his ambitions for the upcoming confrontation.
“I am of course very proud.” Van Dijk said In an interview with Liverpool’s official website.
“I had a feeling of pride when we accomplished the mission in Fulham (in the semi-finals) and advanced to the final match, and it will be a very special, glorious day.” “We hope to achieve the best possible result by winning the cup and bringing it back to Liverpool.” He added.
“I am very much looking forward to seeing all our fans there, of course, and I hope that we will achieve our first title this season.” He explained.
“It is clear in this competition that many young people contributed to getting us to where we are now, so everyone should feel proud of where we are now – and I think this is the reason why we are there.” He continued.
Liverpool is competing for 4 titles this season, as it currently sits at the top of the English Premier League standings, 4 points ahead of its closest competitor, Manchester City, the title holder in the last three seasons. It also reached the round of 16 in the European League and advanced to the fifth round in the FA Cup.
Van Dijk spoke about German Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool coach, announcing his departure from the team at the end of the current season, which came a few days after the team reached the League Cup final.
“Certainly, Klopp’s imminent departure constitutes an additional incentive for us during the remainder of the current season.” The Liverpool captain said. “I think everyone is reacting differently to the news, as we have all said over the past two weeks, this has given all the players the opportunity to show their reaction.” Dijk continued.
“But we want to focus on the upcoming task, and it is clear that the final awaits us, and we are all looking forward to winning our first titles this season.” Van Dijk added.
