Atletico Madrid has expressed interest in signing 22-year-old Villarreal playmaker Alejandro Baena.
Baena is also considered one of Barcelona’s potential targets next summer, but Atletico’s entry into the mix may limit the Catalan club’s ability to keep up with the Rojiblancos financially. Atletico have added Baena to their shortlist of midfielders, which also includes Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino, Valencia’s Javi Guerra and Girona’s Alex Garcia.
But it remains to be seen whether Atletico Madrid is able to bear the costs of contracting with Baena, who has a release clause in his new contract, which extends until 2028, worth 60 million euros.
Atletico Madrid is seeking to reduce the team’s age, because many of the players in the current squad are over thirty years old.
Baena is considered one of Villarreal’s most important players this season, as he scored 5 goals and provided 13 assists in 47 matches in all competitions.
Alejandro Baena played 107 matches with Villarreal, and is currently on the Spanish national team roster.
