English press reports revealed that English club Manchester United faces the risk of being excluded from playing in European championships next season, in light of the European Union’s refusal to change ownership rules.
Aleksander Ceferin, President of the European Union, confirmed that UEFA is considering amending the rules that regulate the prohibition of two teams from playing with the same owner in the same competition, to avoid tampering with the results, either by keeping them as such or allowing clubs with one owner to play in the same competition, and the matter is currently being studied. Where Sir Jim Ratcliffe owns Nice.
“We are not only thinking about Manchester United, but we have 5 or 6 club owners who want to buy another club. We have to see what needs to be done.” Ceferin said.
The English newspaper Daily Mail reported that Manchester United may be banned from playing in European competitions next season, in a strong blow to the new part-owner of United.
Ownership rules will come into effect if the Red Devils qualify for Europe, with Ratcliffe’s new position at United having serious consequences.
European Football Association regulations stipulate that if two teams with the same owner are present in the same European competition, the two teams will be prohibited from playing together in the same competition, but they can play in different competitions.
