Eritrean President Isaias Affourki has said that progress in resolving the conflict in Sudan has so far become elusive due to the proliferation of initiatives and platforms.
On Thursday, Affourki met at the Danden Guest House with Ramtane Lamamra, the envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Sudan. He expressed Eritrea’s support for the UN Secretary-General’s initiative as a viable mechanism to unify all other efforts.
Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Meskel said in post on (X) that President Affourki indicated during the meeting that Eritrea submitted to the Sudanese Sovereignty Council in 2022 a proposal based on the establishment of transitional institutions.
Isaias stated that although the proposal was initially accepted by the Sovereign Council, progress was later hampered by interference and rivalry between various powers.
Affourki urged the UN Secretary-General to make efforts to stop the flow of money and weapons shipments through neighboring countries.
For his part, the UN Secretary-General’s envoy to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, revealed the measures taken by the United Nations and its institutions to promote lasting peace in Sudan, as well as providing support to the Sudanese people who were forced into internal displacement and exile due to the conflict.
