WFP: Opportunity is Diminishing to Avoid Disaster in Sudan

Deputy Executive Director of the World Food Program, Karl Skau, has confirmed that the opportunity to avoid a disaster in Sudan is diminishing.
He stated in a tweet on his account on the “X” platform that he visited the United Nations program team in Sudan to find ways to expand the scope of humanitarian aid to the states of Darfur, Khartoum, Kordofan, Gezira, and others. He stressed the need to “take urgent measures to protect civilians and increase life-saving aid to those most in need.”
The United Nations has repeatedly warned of the scarcity of food aid in the country as clashes worsen and the entry of aid into areas that need it is obstructed, noting that hundreds of thousands suffer from severe food shortages, noting that the specter of famine has loomed over some areas, in addition to the spread of diseases.
The Integrated Interim Classification of Food Security, a global tool for monitoring hunger, also indicated that nearly 18 million Sudanese, more than a third of the country’s population of 49 million, face “high levels of acute food insecurity.” Its estimates also showed this number, nearly five million are one step away from starvation.
