The UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Alice Wairimu Nderitu, said that the current situation in Sudan bears all the signs of a threat of genocide, with strong allegations of this crime.
Nderitu explained – according to “Radio Tamazuj” – that civilians are far from protection, and the civilian population is being targeted in El Fasher, Darfur, and civilians are being attacked and killed because of the color of their skin, or race, and identity, with the spread of hate speech and direct incitement to violence.
She said: “In Sudan today, we find, unequivocally, a state of armed conflict, and we note a dangerous record of violations of international human rights law.”
The UN official expressed her concern about “the motives and incentives for violence expressed by those who committed it, and we are reminded every day of the ability to commit crimes.”
She pointed out that violence “continues against certain groups in a cycle of fueling violence, and we see, clearly, undoubted signs of an intention to destroy certain groups – in whole or in part.”
Nderitu denounced “the weak response regarding the crimes of genocide by the international community, and that this reduces any progress that has been made collectively to prevent the most serious crimes,” stressing that it is necessary to implement all possible measures aimed at protecting the innocent civilian population in the city of El Fasher, and all the lands of Sudan, and it is necessary to stop the ethnic motives of violence. She called for the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need, and the opening of safe corridors for civilians wishing to flee El Fasher, as well as “ensuring accountability for war crimes, bringing the perpetrators to the competent courts with jurisdiction and holding them accountable in order to break the cycle of impunity and violence.”
