Sudan Events – Follow-ups
The UN called on Thursday for an investigation into the massacre committed by the Rapid Support Forces RSF in the town of Wad al-Nura in Gezira state , central Sudan, and for the perpetrators to present to the justice.
The Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta Salami, said in a statement, “I demand for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances and facts of what happened in Wad al-Nura and for those responsible for the crimes to be held accountable.”
She explained that the UN was shocked by reports of violent attacks and the high number of casualties in the town.
She continued, “While the UN does not yet have the full details and facts of yesterday’s events, there are credible reports of heavy gunfire and the use of explosive weapons in populated civilian areas.”
Salami pointed out that the RSF publicly affirmed that its members participated in ground operations in this area on June 5.
She added, “Even by the tragic standards of the conflict in Sudan, the images emerging from Wad al-Noura are heartbreaking.”
She renewed the UN’demands for the importance of respecting the rules of war, respecting international humanitarian law and the commitments made in Jeddah.
She called for avoiding armed clashes and the use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas at all costs and said that civilians can never be a target.
She stressed that impunity cannot be allowed to turn into another situation, as the humanitarian tragedy in Sudan has become a characteristic feature of life.
