Spalletti’s commandments…a complete Italian brand at the beginning of the Euro journey

Luciano Spalletti, coach of Italy, began his most important career with the Azzurri, with an exciting victory over Albania (2-1), in the group stage of UEFA Euro 2024. Spalletti took over the leadership of the Azzurri in September 2023, and led them through the qualifiers, to qualify for the most important stage by competing in the Euro Championship as coach of Italy. Spalletti established new foundations, like commandments that he wanted to plant in the minds of his players, before the start of the tournament, summarizing his ideas with the national team, and indeed this appeared against Albania. The Italian newspapers reported a picture of a plaque bearing 6 commandments from Spalletti to the players, the first of which was to implement constant pressure on the opponent in order to strip and rob them of confidence of the opponent’s players and then control through possession of the ball, as the Azzurri controlled the match thanks to its distinguished midfield led by the star Nicolo Barella. The third was to close the lines and reduce the distances between the players in order to achieve tactical balance. As for the fourth commandment, it was about the necessity of showing a fierce reaction when losing the ball, and the team succeeded in it through strong pressure and regaining possession quickly when losing the fifth. Spalletti wanted his players to organize a return to defense if the opponent started attacking, and to gather solidly. Finally, the coach recommended his players to reorganize and find a tactical system that would allow them to attack.
