Sudanese Attorney General, Yassir Bashir Al-Bukhari, Chairperson of the National Committee to Investigate War Crimes and Violations and Practices of the Rebel Rapid Support Forces RSF affirmed the ability and integrity of the national justice apparatus in Sudan and their firm desire to implement the principle of the rule of law in order to achieve justice, redress for victims and achieve the principle of non-impunity.
He called on the Human Rights Council and the World community to implement the principle of complementarity so that national efforts are the basis, by providing the technical assistance requested by Sudan in the areas of investigations, criminal investigations and law enforcement within the framework of the countries’ commitment to combating transnational organized crime in all its forms, and providing the necessary assistance to establish an international fund for redress and compensation.
The Attorney General, during his presentation at the Human Rights Council on Tuesday, an oral briefing on the human rights situation in Sudan, appealed to neighboring countries to facilitate the mission of the committee to allow access to victims, witnesses and looted items, addition to providing technical and logistical support, including advisory support.
The Attorney General condemned in the strongest terms the violations, crimes and atrocities that the Rapid Support RSF Militia has been committing since April 15, 2023, including killing, displacement and systematic attacks amounting to genocide against the Masalit tribe in West Darfur, which claimed the lives of more than (5,000) people and wounded more than (8,000), the heinous massacre in Wad al-Noura village in Gezira state, which claimed the lives of more than (227) people and wounded more than 150, and the blatant attacks in Sheikh al-Samani village, which claimed the lives of 21 people and wounded 15, in addition to the rebel militia’s use of civilians as human shields and targeting defenseless citizens, particularly women and children, as the number of women who were subjected to physical violence, rape, forced pregnancy and forced marriage reached more than (216) girls and women, addition to the forced recruitment of more than (6,000) children.
According to the Attorney General, the number of children killed in military operations was about (4850) children.
The Attorney General also reviewed the methodology of the National Committee’s work in its investigations and its adherence to the principles of a fair trial, as the courts guaranteed the rights of the accused and provided them with the right to seek legal assistance and provide legal aid from the Ministry of Justice for those who were unable to bring a litigant.
According to the Attorney General, the number of criminal cases registered was 12,470, and (346) arrest warrants were issued against the leaders and members of the rebel forces and they were announced by publication, and the rebel forces were classified as a terrorist group under the law and relevant Security Council resolutions, addition to referring about (65) criminal cases in which investigations were completed to be adjudicated by the national judiciary, which issued rulings in some of them with convictions and others with acquittals.
The Attorney General appealed to the Human Rights Council and the international community to provide the important technical support to the National Committee, so that the Committee can carry out its tasks to the fullest extent.
