Washington: We need the World to wake up to the “Sudan Catastrophe”

Sudan Events – Follow-ups

US officials have warned that Sudan is facing a famine that could become worse than any famine the world witnessed in Ethiopia 40 years ago, as the war that has been going on for more than a year continues with the flow of weapons and preventing the delivery of aid.
US Ambassador to the United Nations UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told reporters: “We need the world to wake up to the catastrophe that is happening before our eyes in Sudan.”
She added: “In the worst-case scenario, the famine in Sudan could become more deadly than the famine in Ethiopia in the early 1980s.”
Greenfield continued: “We have seen death projections that estimate that more than 2.5 million people, or about 15% of the population in Darfur and Kordofan – the areas most affected – could die by the end of September,” adding: “This is the largest humanitarian crisis on the planet.”
