Demands for Supporting Leather Sector
Sudan Events – Nahid Oshi
Secretary-General of Leather Exporters Chamber, Mohamed Ali Hassan, acknowledged the deterioration of leather sector, and described the situation of leather during Eid al-Adha this year as the worst, and said that everyone abandoned the leather by throwing it away and not benefiting from it, whether domestically or for export, for reasons primarily the high customs duties on raw leather.
He told Sudan hat the operating costs of leather are high, as the worker’s fees reach SDGs 200 per piece for the worker and SDGs 100 for transportation.
He added that the loss is greater than the profit, as 90% of the sector’s problems are limited to the high cost of leather manufacturing.
He pointed out that the cost of moving a single leather cart from the city of Madani amounts to SDGs 15 billion , and said that the national producers currently do not have money, and those currently working are foreigners and those cooperating with the Rapid Support RSF Militia.
He affirmed lack of funding from banks to finance the sector, and said that safe states such as the North, Kassala and Gedaref can provide more than 800,000 hides, but the lack of funding agencies is an obstacle to moving the sector and re-operating it, in addition to the lack of capabilities in those states.
He called on the state to sit with national investors and facilitate procedures so that the sector can be moved, particularly tanning, affirming that if the sector does not receive huge funding, it will stop.
