War Causes Removal of the tree cover of the Gum Arabic Tree

Sudan Events – Rehab Abdullah

Hassan Jad Karim, a member of Gum Arabic Council from Khamas area in Al-Khawi, affirmed that one of the negative repercussions of the war and the ongoing conflicts is targeting the tree cover and plants, specifically the gum arabic tree, the ard, the tambarib and the heglig, and this is attributed to the result of the indiscriminate cutting by the displaced and farmers, as well as those affected by the fighting in the belt and the southern border strip of West Kordofan state.
He revealed the pressures facing the residents of the region, including poverty and famine, but he was optimistic about the onset of autumn and the rains falling in central Kordofan, thus enabling people to farm.
He pointed to their initiative to employ their presence among the people (as displaced people under the care of the local community) to raise public awareness and warn of the dangers of cutting down trees and removing the vegetation cover, and to rely on oneself and avoid tribal hostilities and disputes that are not approved by religious or societal doctrine. For his part, the head of Gum Arabic Division, Ahmed Al-Tayeb Al-Anan, called on the division’s members to support producers through their associations with financial support to facilitate livelihoods.
