Sudan Events – Follow-ups
A UN spokeswoman said that the two warring parties in Sudan arrived in Geneva for talks that began on Thursday, mediated by the United Nations UN with the aim of “a possible ceasefire in areas” in order to facilitate the access and distribution of humanitarian aid and protect civilians.
According to Reuters, the UN spokeswoman said, “The talks seek to identify ways to enhance humanitarian measures and protect civilians through a possible ceasefire in areas at the request of the Security Council,” adding that the talks are being held by the UN envoy to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra.
She continued by saying: They are “proximity talks,” meaning that the two parties, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces RSF are not scheduled to meet face-to-face to negotiate, but rather through mediators.
US Ambassador to the United Nations UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told CBS News that US Special Envoy to Sudan Tom Perriello is also participating in the Geneva talks, which aim to explore “how to address the humanitarian situation and deliver aid to those in need, and reach a political solution that brings the two parties together.”
