Eriksson to Southgate: I do what we could never do

The former Swedish coach of the England national team, Sven-Goran Eriksson, sent a message to the current coach of the “Three Lions”, Gareth Southgate, before the final of the European Championship 2024, scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, against Spain. Eriksson, who coached the England national team between 2001 and 2006, suffers from pancreatic cancer. He revealed last January that he had “about a year” to live, according to doctors’ estimates.
“The final match on Sunday will be open, and I think England has a very big chance. I have not been feeling well over the past week or so, so I will watch the match from home.. I would like to see England win.. and this is the case for all the managers who have tried and failed to win a major title since 1966, come on, Gareth, do what we could never do. The job of England coach brings with it great pressure. You hear a lot about 1966, and what Sir Alf Ramsey’s team did, and you know the extent of the expectations expected of you to end all those painful years.” Eriksson wrote.
“I felt it. Sir Bobby Robson felt it. Every one of the 13 coaches since Sir Alf felt it. None of us succeeded, but none of us came closer (to winning a major title) than Gareth Southgate.” Eriksson added.
“Gareth is definitely the best English coach since Sir Alf… and if he wins in Berlin on Sunday, I think he should be considered the best.” He continued.
