UN: Geneva Discussions a Encouraging First Step

Sudan Events – Follow-ups

The Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations UN for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, said that the discussions he held in Geneva – separately – with the delegations of the SAF and the Rapid Support Forces RSF were an encouraging first step in the framework of a long and complex process.
Lamamra expressed his optimism about the readiness of both sides to engage with him on a number of important issues, and the pledges they made regarding specific demands he presented to them in the discussions.
Lamamra and his team held about 20 separate discussion sessions with the two delegations during the period between July 11 and 19 in the Swiss city of Geneva.
He said that the two delegations spoke during the discussions about their positions on a number of key issues in light of their responsibilities, which allowed for deepening mutual understanding. He added that the discussions explored ways to address these issues to contribute to alleviating the suffering of the civilian population in Sudan.
He added that he intends to continue to engage closely with the leaders of both sides to follow up on the implementation of the pledges and communicate with them on critical issues.
The UN envoy stated that the humanitarian situation in Sudan remains catastrophic and deteriorating every day.
He affirmed the need for urgent action to ensure that humanitarian assistance reaches all those in need and that all civilians in Sudan are protected.
He affirmed that he is counting on both sides to translate their willingness to engage with him into tangible progress on the ground, and said that the United Nations UN will continue to make every effort to support civilians throughout Sudan.
