Chelsea signed young American international defender Caleb Wiley from Atlanta United, according to what the London Football Club announced on Monday.
Wiley agreed to sign a six-year contract with the option to extend for an additional year, as part of a deal that will cost Chelsea $10.9 million, according to reports.
“Chelsea FC is pleased to announce the signing of American international player Caleb Wiley.” The club said on its website.
Wiley (19 years old) has been playing in the left-back position with the first team for Atalanta since 2022, and he played his first international match with his country against Mexico in October 2023.
Wiley will participate with the US national team in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he is currently located.
The newcomer to the London team will become an additional option for Italian coach Enzo Maresca, in light of the presence of Spaniard Mark Cucurella and Ben Chilwell.
Media outlets indicated that the club may loan Wiley to Strasbourg next season, knowing that the French club is under the ownership of the American “Bloco” consortium led by Chelsea owner Todd Buhle.
