The Canadian Olympic Committee issued an official apology to the New Zealand women’s national team, due to a drone flying over the training field, with the aim of spying on the latter’s plans. The crisis began last Monday, when the technical staff of the New Zealand women’s national team spotted a drone spying on the players’ training in preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee revealed to the media at the time that it had informed the French police, who were able to arrest two people from the Canadian women’s team: Joseph Lombardi, the video analyst, and Jasmine Mander, the assistant coach.
The Canadian spy attempt came before the two teams’ meeting, scheduled for Thursday at the opening of the first group competitions.
The International Olympic Committee later announced that it had decided to expel Canadians Lombardi and Mander from France and return them to their homes, and also to accept the offer of English coach Bev Priestman to remove herself from her team’s match against New Zealand.
