An Invitation to the Mining Companies to return to South Kordofan and Resume their Activities

Governor of South Kordofan, Mohamed Ibrahim Abdel Karim, called on mining companies that left as a result of the security situation to return to the state and resume their activities, pointing to the stability of the security situation and the desire of the local community to resume the companies’ activities.
During the meeting of the state Mining Coordination Council, the governor listened to the performance report of the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company (SMRC) Limited presented by Warsha Nasser Warsha, the director of the company’s office in the state.
The governor renewed their commitment to removing obstacles that hinder the return of companies, and stated that mining is a large and important resource and that gold is a way out for the state at this time.
Abdul Karim affirmed the importance of coordination between the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company( SMRC) localities, communities, security agencies in the mines and collection departments to regulate work in the coming period and solve the problems facing the traditional mining sector.
He revealed a plan to establish a gold exchange in one of the eastern localities to reduce the suffering and risks for “goldsmiths”, noting the formation of a committee to prepare a study for this purpose “and we will issue a decision to establish it after the completion of the study”.
The governor revealed a directive to establish accounts for local communities in the Central Bank of Sudan CBS to allow the flow of social responsibility funds from the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company ( SMRC)on a monthly basis to benefit from them in development and reconstruction programs at the local level.
For his part, Director of the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company (SMRC) Office in South Kordofan state, Warsha Nasser Warsha, said that the report he submitted to the Mining Coordination Council included the position of revenues and the work of companies in mining waste, the position of the environment and safety, and combating gold smuggling.
He explained that the meeting approved the need for coordination between all relevant parties and holding a periodic meeting of the Mining Coordination Council to follow up on decisions and recommendations, pointing to the state government’s decisions to intensify procedures at entrances and exits to prevent gold smuggling, which would benefit the country, the state and the local community.
