171 Camps in Darfur facing Risk of the Famine Revealed
Sudan Events – Follow-ups
Spokesperson for the Darfur Displaced Persons and Refugees Coordination, Adam Regal said that the situation of Zamzam camp in North Darfur state, whose residents were declared to be suffering from famine, is similar to the situation of more than 171 camps in Darfur region.
Regal said according to “Sudan Tribune” that “despite the delay in declaring famine in Zamzam camp, the rest of the Darfur camps, which number more than 171 camps, are living in the same conditions.”
He pointed out that between 10 and 25 people die daily in Darfur camps due to malnutrition, lack of food and food supplies, and lack of life-saving medicines.
He added: “Those who die daily are children, pregnant women, mothers, the elderly, people with chronic diseases, and people with special needs, due to not receiving aid, humanitarian assistance, and medicines since the outbreak of the ongoing conflict, except in very rare cases.”
He affirmed that the displacement camps and host communities are suffering from famine conditions, due to the depletion of food, the closure of supply routes and the lack of agriculture due to insecurity.
