Floods Isolate Areas in Northern Sudan
Sudan Events – Follow-ups
Torrential floods isolated several areas in the Red Sea, Northern and River Nile states on Friday, amid warnings of record rainfall rates over the next 48 hours that may cause more valleys to flow.
The floods cut off national roads and damaged citizens’ homes in areas not accustomed to heavy rains in the far north of the country.
Floods swept away cars, goods and belongings in the mountains of Jabeit locality in the Red Sea state.
The state, located in the far northeast of Sudan, witnessed heavy rains accompanied by strong winds during the past two days, which caused the death of at least four people in the city of Port Sudan.
A strong flood also hit the Shaqr area in the city of Port Sudan.
The General Authority for Meteorology expected heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and winds in the states of “Kassala, Red Sea, River Nile, Northern, Khartoum,Gezira state, and White Nile state.”
The Authority warned of torrential floods, Gash River flooding, and the flow of valleys and creeks.
In the village of Artoli, north of Atbara city in River Nile state, the flow of Khor Al-Maraka floods threatens the town amid fears of a road closure.
Floods cut off Atbara-Tangasi Highway linking River Nile and Northern states at kilometer 130, which led to a halt in traffic and congestion of trucks and vehicles at Al-Qureir intersection station in the Northern state, as this road became a main outlet for the state after the outbreak of war in April 2023.
The northern artery highway between the city of Merowe and Tangasi in the Northern state was also cut off due to floods that flowed into Wadi Abu Dom, causing the bridge to collapse on the valley.
Wadi Abu Dom floods resulted in damage to plantations and agricultural areas, in addition to the fall of electricity poles near the path of the floods.
The Sudanese Red Crescent Society, Northern state branch, said in a press release on Friday, ” Abu Dom Bridge collapsed, cutting off the highway linking Merowe and Tanqasi due to the floods that hit the area at dawn on Friday.”
The release stated that the floods resulted in the total and partial collapse of a number of homes in Al-Inqaz neighborhood in Merowe city, where Red Crescent volunteers are carrying out evacuation operations and providing first aid services.
In the northern parts of the Northern state, floods and rains damaged citizens’ homes in Hafir Misho, about 60 kilometers north of Dongla, amid calls for relief for the area that houses hundreds of displaced families.
In the same context, the valleys and creeks in the Mishkilat Al-Mahas area, about 180 kilometers north of Dongla, witnessed an unprecedented flow of flood water in areas that rarely witness heavy rainfall.
