Sudan Events – Follow-ups

The Sudanese army SAF announced, on Tuesday, the evacuation of Italian nuns, priests and citizens from the state of South Sudan through a special military operation from Al-Shajara area south of Khartoum to Omdurman.

A statement issued by the spokesperson for the Sudanese SAF ,Brig. Gen.Nabil Abdullah, said that “the Sudanese Armed Forces SAF and the General Intelligence Service evacuated, in a special operation, the nuns of the Italian Catholic Salesian Society, consisting of five nuns and a priest from the Italian Don Bosco Society, and about 20 citizens from South Sudan, from their residences in Al-Shajara south of Khartoum to Omdurman in preparation for their transfer to Port Sudan.”

He explained that the group had been stuck for a year and four months in an area under the control of the Sudanese Armed Forces SAF in Al-Shajara area, where their home was part of an educational service project that includes a nursery and an elementary school and is known as the House of Saint Mary.

He pointed out that the armed forces SAF and the intelligence service continued to follow up on the group’s needs and provide them, including medical care, food and solar energy supplies.

He added that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)tried to evacuate the group, but the operation was unsuccessful because what he described as militias targeted the procession.

He noted that the Sudanese authorities received an official request from the church to move its parishioners from these areas, so the armed forces took on the task and transported them to Omdurman.
