The spokesperson for the World Food Programme (WFP) in Sudan, Leni Kinzli, announced that two convoys carrying approximately 6,000 tons of food and nutritional supplies are en route to famine-prone areas in the Darfur region.
Both the WFP and the World Health Organization (WHO) welcomed the news that Sudanese authorities will open the Adré border crossing from Chad into Sudan.
In a press conference held by UN agencies in Geneva, Kinzli said that this vital humanitarian corridor would allow the WFP to expand its aid reach to 14 areas experiencing or threatened by famine in the Darfur, Kordofan, Khartoum, and Gezira states.
Kinzli, speaking via video from Nairobi, added: “As we speak, two convoys carrying about 6,000 metric tons of food and nutritional supplies for about half a million people are being loaded and will head to famine-threatened areas in North, Central, and West Darfur once official government communications and approvals are received.”
