Postponement of Sudanese-American Consultations in Cairo, Government Affirms Commitment to Genuine Peace

Sudan Events – Reports
The consultations that were scheduled between the Sudanese and American governments to discuss the implementation of the Jeddah Agreement, which were expected to take place in the Egyptian capital on Wednesday, have been postponed. The U.S. envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, announced on his (X) platform account that he left Cairo and returned to Switzerland to continue discussions with the delegations there regarding the delivery of humanitarian aid.
He added: “As part of our ongoing close partnership with Egypt in the effort to save lives in Sudan, I appreciate the opportunity to meet with President Sisi, Foreign Minister Abdoul Gheit, and other government leaders.” He also clarified that the Egyptian government had set a date for a meeting with a delegation from Port Sudan, but the meeting was canceled after the delegation breached protocols.
In this context, the Sudanese government issued a statement clarifying its position on the Cairo consultations.
The government appreciated the efforts made by the Arab Republic of Egypt since the outbreak of the Rapid Support Forces militia war, particularly its hosting of Sudanese people and its efforts to achieve peace and its initiative to host the consultative meeting with the United States of America, which did not take place due to circumstances related to the U.S. delegation.
The statement added, “The Sudanese government decided to send a government delegation to Cairo to meet with the American delegation, and two of our delegation members have arrived in Cairo since Monday, August 19, 2024, still waiting for the rest of the delegation to join them. This confirms our seriousness and sincere desire to continue the previous consultation that we initiated with the United States of America in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from August 9 to 10 of this year.”
It continued, “We note that these consultations have nothing to do with what is happening in Geneva meetings but rather aim to clarify our vision regarding the implementation of the Jeddah Declaration signed on May 11, 2023.”
The statement affirmed that the Sudanese government’s principal stance is its commitment to genuine peace based on sincere intentions and the implementation of the Jeddah Declaration, as this represents a beginning to fulfill the people’s aspirations, open the way for citizens to return to their homes, restore public facilities to work, open public roads, and help normalize life in preparation for negotiating the fate of the rebellious militia and other arrangements related to peace.
The statement added, “The Sudanese government’s response to this kind invitation is in the context of its openness to initiatives leading to peace, preserving the safety of the country and its national institutions, and alleviating the suffering of our people. The Sudanese government will remain keen on responding to what fulfills the desires of the Sudanese people and is ready for any consultative rounds to be determined within this framework, with the necessity of prior coordination with us and not imposing a fait accompli from one side.”
