Red Cross Demands Access to Residents in El Fasher
Sudan Events – Follow-ups
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) appealed on Thursday to the warring parties in Sudan to allow it access to residents in El Fasher, in the North Darfur region. A spokesperson for the ICRC stated that the main road to the city has become impassable, and despite repeated efforts, the ICRC has been unable to bring relief supplies into El Fasher. The spokesperson added that thousands of civilians are trapped. The ICRC welcomed the Sovereignty Council’s order to open the Adre crossing with Chad for three months, with dozens of aid trucks already on their way from there to western Darfur. The ICRC stated in a press release, “Any initiative that can improve access to humanitarian aid is important and a positive development.” The organization noted that these three months coincide with the rainy season, and many roads are already impassable due to severe flooding.
